What is MAAT + ATLÉTICO?
MAAT + Atlético is a partnership between an art museum and a football club. It turns Estádio da Tapadinha — home of Atlético Clube de Portugal — into a place for contemporary art, open to everyone, not just on matchdays.
The idea is simple. A stadium sits empty most of the month, a huge space with little public life between games. An art museum is always looking for new ways to reach people. Bring the two together and each solves the other: the stadium comes alive beyond football, and art meets an audience it would never otherwise find.
What you'll see here is the result — works made by artists who've engaged directly with this place: its history, its supporters, and its neighborhood in Alcântara. Some are permanent, others rotate. Together they reshape the stadium into something that belongs to the whole community — a home for art as much as for sport.
Works on Display
Most of what you see here was made for this place — and the rest was chosen for it. Artists working in carved stone, sculpture, and painted tile respond to Estádio da Tapadinha: its history, its colors, its supporters, and the neighborhood around it. The result isn't art dropped into a stadium; it's art that belongs to one.
Each takes a different way in. One carves the club's story straight into the wall, drawing more than eighty years of faces and moments out of the surface itself. One wraps the entrance ramp in hand-painted tiles that welcome you in. And one rises over Alcântara in gleaming metal and glass, facing the bridge and the river. Between them they turn the ordinary surfaces of a football ground into things to stop and look at, and mark the beginning of Tapadinha's life as a place for art as much as for sport.
